            Definition of terms, vocabulary

            Pleasure boating

                   Yachts, mega-yachts, mini-cruise ships, cruise ships

                   Private pleasure boats - runabouts, personal watercraft

            Sports related - SCUBA, snorkeling, kayaking, sailboards, water skiing, etc.

            Recreational fishing - sport fishing, party boats

            Wildlife tours - whale watching, seabird watching, marine life viewing

            Water taxi, commercial ferries.

 

2.      Tourism (history and types)

            History of pleasure boating

                   Birth of pleasure yachting - earliest history 

                   Crewed yachts, bareboat industry

            Types of Tourism

                   Ecotourism - history, specialties, requirements

                   Historical and cultural tourism

                   Special interest tourism - hiking, golf, biking, etc.

            Tourism and Economic development

                   Role of tourism in island economies

                   Opportunities for entrepreneurship.  Social and cultural impacts of tourism

                   Infrastructure needs.  Environmental considerations

 

3.      The Marine Industry

            The role of yachting in tourism development

            Infrastructure required

                   Services supplied by government.  Marinas and boatyards.  Ship chandleries

                   Shoreside logistical services - office services, crew placement, mail, etc.

            Support services required           

                   Vessel maintenance - mechanical, structural, cosmetic

                   Operations - provisions, laundry, transportation

                   Leisure and entertainment - restaurants, hotels, land tours, etc.

                   Yacht management - vessel security and service, clearing houses

                   Marketing - yacht brokers, charter brokers, PR agencies

                   Agents and brokers - import services, customs/immigration clearance
